The U.S Marshall who was struck by a RIPTA bus on Wednesday as he crossed Washington Street between the U.S. District Court and the adjacent John O. Pastore Federal building, succumbed to his injuries. The Marshall, identified as Frank McKnight, a retired North Kingstown Police Officer. After retiring as a Lieutenant with 25 years of service, McKnight served as a court security officer for the last 13 years, most recently posted at the U.S. District Court in Providence. "I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of federal Court Security Officer Frank McKnight, 69, of North Kingstown, said U.S. Marshall Jamie A. Hainsworth. "Officer McKnight passed away at Rhode Island Hospital at 6:30 [Thursday evening]. Officer McKnight’s family was by his side." Hainsworth went on to describe McKnight as "a dedicated, career law enforcement officer and public servant who came to work daily eager and ready to serve, brandishing a positive attitude and always with a smile. His distinguished career will be heralded. His absence will be greatly felt by all that he worked with and served." The bus was turning from Exchange Street onto Washington Street when it struck McKnight shortly after 1 PM on Wednesday. The accident is currently under investigation by the Providence Police Department. |
