In the aftermath of last week's horrific Paris terrorist attacks, media became flooded by political rhetoric from both sides of the aisles regarding Syrian refugees current. Governors in 26 states made statements that they would refuse to accept any Syrian refugees, with the leaders of 17 other states saying they would welcome refugees with open arms. The U.S. House even passed a bill that essentially will close the border to Syrian and Iraqi refugees until enhanced security measures can be implemented. Oliver finds this last part to be ridiculous, given that refugees are already put through a much more rigorous screening process than any other type of immigration: “You’ll be put through security screenings by the National Counter-terrorism Center, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, and if you’re a Syrian refugee, you’ll get an additional layer of screening called the Syria Enhanced Review, which may include a further check by a special part of Homeland Security — the USCIS [United States Citizenship and Immigration Services] fraud detection and national security directorate,” Oliver explained. “And don’t relax yet, because we’ve barely even started.” Watch John Oliver explain how Syrian Refugees are currently processed below!Oliver continued, lament on how Americans have failed to learn their own history, “Every generation has had its own ugly reaction to refugees, whether the Irish, Vietnamese, Cubans or Haitians, and those fears have been broadly unfounded. In fact there was only one time in American history when the fear of refugees wiping everyone out did actually come true — and we’ll all be sitting around a table celebrating it on Thursday.” |
