When WBOB management asked me to write about current affairs in Russia and the defunct Soviet Union, my first thought was, "how would I write a comedic piece about this without horrible puns?" Which then lead me to want to title the my piece, "Putin On The Blitz." However when I was told that I would appear on the society page, I refrained from that sort of journalism. Here is what I know. In a case of deja vu for those of us old enough to remember the Cold War, we have Russian aggression, tanks rolling into a neighboring Eastern European country, and the usual spirited objections flying fast and hard from the West. This time around, it’s a cranky Russian leader named Vladimir Putin who doesn’t give a damn about those objections. Why should he? |
